Highway 1 still closed as Big Sur wildfire grows to more than 5,000 acres

The Timber Fire in Big Sur grew to 5,153 acres by Monday morning while continuing to threaten 503 structures, according to Cal Fire.

The wildfire was 17% contained with 2,067 personnel fighting the fire, Cal Fire said.

The Timber Fire first sparked as a 4.6-acre fire on Sunday evening, and quickly blackened nearly 3,000 acres by Tuesday evening and more than 4,200 acres by Thursday morning, The Tribune previously reported.

Some residents and businesses long the Monterey County coast remain under evacuation orders or warnings as of Monday morning, according to Cal Fire.

A portion of Highway 1 is currently shut down to traffic. The highway is closed from mile marker 45.1 near the Big Sur Bakery to mile marker 37 at Julia Pfeiffer Burns State Park, the state fire agency said.

All trails and roads in the fire area are also under a closure order, according to the Los Padres National Forest Service.

Where is Timber Fire burning?

The blaze was burning southeast of Loma Vista and south of Big Sur River in Monterey County.

According to wildfire app Watch Duty, firefighters were able to conduct burning operations on the south end of the fire amid favorable weather conditions Sunday evening.

Crews stopped the fire near Partington Ridge and Highway 1 and continued mop up operations along the coastal edge of the blaze, Watch Duty said.

On Monday, firefighters were trying to staunch areas of heat near the Big Sur River and working to secure containment lines along the northern side of the fire, the Los Padres National Forest Service.

The cause of the wildfire is under investigation, Cal Fire said.

Five zones were under evacuation orders with an “immediate threat to life” within the vicinity of the blaze:

  • MRY-F025
  • MRY-F026
  • MRY-F027
  • MRY-F028-A

Five other zones were under evacuation warnings with a “potential threat to life” to the north and south:

  • MRY-F021-B
  • MRY-F022
  • MRY-F024
  • MRY-F028-B
  • MRY-F029

An evacuation shelter was available at Carmel Middle School at 4830 Carmel Valley Road in Carmel. The shelter accepts pets.
