The casual-dining, French-inspired restaurant at 2719 E. Bidwell St. in Broadstone Plaza announced the closure with a note on its door, the Sacramento Business Journal reported Sunday.

Mimi’s Cafe has been steadily shrinking its footprint across the United States, including around Sacramento.

An Arden Arcade location closed last year, the Business Journal reported, Another, in Roseville, shuttered in early 2024. And a South Natomas Mimi’s location closed in 2015.

Sacramento-area Mimi’s fans will now have to travel to Elk Grove, where the chain’s only remaining restaurant in the region is at 9195 W. Stockton Blvd.

Mimi’s Cafe was purchased from Bob Evans in 2013 by Groupe Le Duff, a privately held conglomerate that owns several other French-inspired restaurant chains. At the time, Mimi’s had 145 locations, including 57 in California. The chain generated an annual revenue of $380 million, Groupe Le Duff said.

Nearly 15 years after the sale, Mimi’s has shrunk from 145 locations to 39, according to the company’s website. The majority of those restaurants – 24 – are located in Southern California.

Mimi’s was founded in 1978 by Americans Arthur and Thomas Sims, a father-son duo. Arthur was stationed in France during World War II. After his return to the United States, he ran the commissary at MGM Studios before opening a series of cafes. In 1974, Thomas joined his father in the restaurant business, according to an International Directory of Company Histories entry re-published on the website fundinguniverse.com.
