The death of Danny Aguilar, 47, was being investigated as a homicide, the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation announced in a news release.
The deadly attack occurred about 9:30 a.m. at California State Prison, Sacramento, commonly known as New Folsom. At that time, prison staff saw Julio Caesar Madrigal, 36, another inmate, “striking” Aguilar, CDCR officials said.
Prison guards ordered all inmates in the area to get down. CDCR officials said Madrigal failed to comply with the command, and the prison guards fired two less-lethal rounds at him to stop the attack.
Prison staff began life-saving measures on Aguilar as they transferred him to the prison’s triage and treatment area. About 10 a.m., a physician pronounced Aguilar dead. No prison staff injuries were reported.
CDCR officials said Madrigal was restrained and remained in restricted housing at the prison Tuesday afternoon pending an investigation by the prison’s Investigative Services Unit and the Sacramento County District Attorney’s Office.
Authorities found an improvised weapon was at the scene, CDCR officials said, and Facility C has been placed on modified program. The Office of the Inspector General was notified of the death and the homicide investigation.

Aguilar was serving a sentence of life in prison without the possibility of parole for a 2006 Los Angeles County conviction.
Madrigal is serving a potential life in prison sentence for a 2022 Tulare County conviction of first-degree murder, which was considered a second-strike offense under California’s “Three Strikes” law.
Tuesday’s deadly attack is the second time in the past week that an inmate’s death at California State Prison, Sacramento, was being investigated as a homicide.
Walter Badelle, 37, was found unconscious and unresponsive about 2 p.m. last Tuesday, Aug. 11, in his prison cell. Staff provided medical aid but could not revive him, and Badelle was pronounced dead about an hour later.
His cellmate, 45-year-old Jonathan Blackwell, 45, Badelle’s cellmate, was detained and placed in restrictive housing pending the homicide investigation.
