Nick Bosa makes ‘a lot of progress’ with knee injury. When will he return for 49ers?

Nick Bosa could be back to practicing soon, perhaps as early as this weekend following the San Francisco 49ers’ second preseason game on Thursday.

“Yeah, he’s making a lot of progress,” coach Kyle Shanahan told reporters Tuesday after a joint practice with the Los Angeles Chargers in El Segundo. “There’s a lot less irritation, soreness, tendinitis, whatever you want to call it, than he had last week. So we think he’s going the right direction.”

Bosa, who is coming off an ACL tear Sept. 21, began training camp doing individual drills and not participating in team sessions. But he’s been limited to work away from practice since the first week due to knee tendinitis. Shanahan said it occurs for roughly 90% of the team’s players who deal with ACL tears.

The injury is notable given it’s the third time Bosa, 28, has torn an ACL dating back to high school. It’s the second time he’s torn the ligament in his right knee, which could help explain the complex nature of his recovery.

Bosa has headlined San Francisco’s defensive end group that’s been marred by injuries during the two-plus weeks of training camp. The other top two defensive ends, 2025 first-round draft pick Mykel Williams and Keion White, have both missed significant time. Rookie third-round pick Romello Height and veteran Sam Okuayinonu have been the team’s top two defensive ends.

White has been out since Aug. 1 with an adductor injury, while Williams has been working back from an ACL tear suffered Nov. 2. Both players have been seen doing side work during practice.

Shanahan on Tuesday said Williams could miss the season opener, but indicated he’s trending in the right direction.

“He’s further away than those other guys you asked about, but I do think he’s close,” Shanahan said. “I think Week 1 would be a long shot. We haven’t ruled it out yet, but I think he’s progressing very well.”

The 49ers will play the Chargers in their second preseason game, 7 p.m. Thursday at SoFi Stadium, and are scheduled to return to practice in Santa Clara with sessions on Saturday and Sunday.
