A number of businesses announced their arrival across the Sacramento region as August got underway. This month, a handful of businesses in the area shut down, two of them longtime fixtures of the region.

Here’s what opened and closed in August.
Which businesses opened in August?
Der Biergarten
The Sacramento-born German beer garden, Der Biergarten, opened a second location along the Old Sacramento waterfront at 1108 Front St.
Der Biergarten Waterfront is part of the city of Sacramento’s Waterfront Reinvestment program, a $25 million city-funded effort to boost tourism and foot traffic in Old Sacramento.
“We wanted to bring the same communal outdoor atmosphere people enjoy at our Midtown location to the waterfront,” co-owner Sean Derfield wrote in a news release. “Watching the riverboats pass by and hearing the sea lions make it a different Sacramento experience.”
Der Biergarten sells German-style beer on tap, German pretzels, pretzel sandwiches, old-fashioned hot dogs and fries, according to its online menu.
The beer garden is open Sunday through Thursday from 11 a.m. to 8:45 p.m., and from Friday to Saturday from 11 a.m. to 9:45 p.m.
Lviv Sandwiches
With its beginnings in Ukraine, Lviv Sandwiches opened in Fair Oaks this month, serving croissant sandwiches at 5343 Sunrise Blvd.
Located in the Quail Pointe Shopping Center, the arrival of Lviv Sandwiches is the first California location of the international chain. The restaurant also sells salads, coffee, and iced teas.
Lviv Sandwiches is open from 6 a.m. to 11 p.m. daily.
Ume Tea
A popular boba chain from the Silicon Valley opened its third store in the Sacramento region, launching a new shop in Arden Arcade.
Ume Tea on 2924 Fulton Ave., is serving customers in the Town & County Village Shopping Center. The store serves classic boba drinks, as well as milk tea, fruit tea, yogurt drinks and uiji matcha.
The team shop’s menu includes its “ultimate snack combo” with baby corn, chicken strips, potatoes and curly fries.
Ume Tea is open daily, from noon to 8 p.m.
Steele House Coffee
Compton’s Market in East Sacramento welcomed Steele House Coffee, a local favorite from Yuba City.
Steele House operates inside the historic East Sacramento grocery store at 4065 McKinley Blvd. The coffee house serves dark roast coffees, said owner Johnny Daughtery.
“A lot of people…they’ve got to have some gimmick,” Daugherty said. “Our gimmick would be that we just try hard to make sure we have good quality coffee and a really good customer experience.”
Steele House is open every day from 7 a.m. to 2 p.m.
Hui Lau Shan
The Hong Kong dessert spot, Hui Lau Shan, is open in Elk Grove. Selling a diverse variety of mango-flavored sweets, the store is located at 8355 Elk Grove Blvd.
Hui Lau Shan’s menu includes mango pancakes, coconut jelly with mango chunks, mango pudding, mango mochi and mango pomelo.
The dessert shop is open from 2 p.m. to 9 p.m. daily.
The 1920s Bookstore
Inspired by the Prohibition-era, the speakeasy known as The 1920s Bookstore serves history-themed cocktails in Old Sacramento at 900 2nd St.
The business is meant to represent “the golden age of the speakeasy,” said San Bao, the business’s owner. During the 1920s and early 1930s, it was illegal to serve alcohol.
As a way to get around the law, speakeasies were disguised as other business, such as bookstores, Bao said.

“Prohibition turned drinking into rebellion and bartenders into alchemists — honey and citrus masking bathtub gin, hidden rooms behind unmarked doors,” Bao told The Sacramento Bee. The bar’s exterior is in keeping with the hidden room aspect of the historic liquor dens.
. Due to the business’s small, quaint space, reservations are mandatory.
The 1920s Bookstore is open Sundays to Wednesdays at 4:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. and Thursdays to Fridays from 4:30 p.m. to 10 p.m.
Taqueria La Perla Tapatia
The Sacramento-based taqueria chain, Taqueria La Perla Tapatia, opened in Rancho Cordova at 3221 Zinfandel Drive.
Best known for its street tacos, carne asada plates and super burritos, the owners wrote on social media that every dish is “made with the same quality that’s made us a local favorite for years.”
Taqueria La Perla Tapatia is open Mondays to Thursdays from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. and Fridays to Saturdays from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m.
Frico Pizza Co.
Detroit-style deep dish pizza is now available along the Broadway corridor in Land Park.
Frico Pizza Co., 1429 Broadway, specializes in not just the popular pizza style from Michigan, but also serves New York style pizza, potato wedges, salads and chicken wings.
The pizzeria’s deep dish, which is around $23 to $29 is 8-by-10 inches.
Customers are welcome from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. daily, according to its website.
Which businesses closed in August?
Thrift Town
Famous for its appearance in the Sacramento-filmed “Lady Bird,” Thrift Town was scheduled to cease operation as of Sept. 1, the store’s staff told The Bee.
This marked the second closure for the 410 El Camino Ave. shop. In 2020, the store closed because of lost business due to COVID-19. The shutdown was short-lived, and it reopened under new ownership the following year.
Bober Tea
Midtown’s Bober Tea, 1801 L St., closed after six years in the popular restaurant neighborhood.
Bober Tea was known for its brown sugar milk teas, chizu fruit teas and okumidori matcha imported from Japan.
According to its Yelp page, the shop closed in mid-August.
There are five other locations in the Sacramento area, located in Folsom, Elk Grove, Rancho Cordova and Roseville.
Delta of Venus
The cafe and music venue, Delta of Venus, closed Wednesday.
Owner Lee Walthall announced his retirement on the business’s social media. Delta of Venus was open for 33 years.
Throughout the decades, the cafe served breakfast, brunch and featured performances from local musicians.
“It has been the honor of a lifetime to build community with you all,” the staff said in an online post. “From the first moments to the last, it has been an amazing, magical ride.”
Shangri-La
The owner of Shangri-La is selling the Fair Oaks eatery, she told The Bee on August 28. Sommer Peterson, the owner, said she decided to put the business up for sale in order to spend more time with her daughter.
Shangri-La on 7960 Winding Way is listed for $415,000. Peterson said the restaurant will remain open until its officially bought.
