Baby toy sold in CA stores recalled for choking hazard. What shoppers should know

A popular baby gear manufacturer has recalled a teething toy sold in stores nationwide, including in California.

Skip Hop recalled a “Sesame Street”-themed teether because it poses a “risk of serious injury or death from choking hazard,” according to an announcement shared by the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission and Health Canada.

Which baby toy got recalled?

On Sept. 3, Skip Hop Skip voluntarily recalled an Elmo teether because “the black eyes could detach from the teether if frozen.”

The New York-based company said it’s recalling a total of 22,000 units of the Skip Hop Baby Sesame Street Elmo Silicone Teether.

“The product is in the shape of Elmo’s face … and includes a textured key (blue) and fabric crayon box,” Skip Hop said.

There’s a red tag with the Skip Hop brand name and a model number — Model No. 9R263210 — attached to the side of the crayon box.

Where was recalled teether sold?

The recalled teethers were sold at Carter’s retail stores nationwide and online from January 2025 through March, according to the recall.

There have been four reports of eyes detaching from the teething toy, but no injuries have been reported, federal officials said.

What should I do if I bought a recalled teething toy?

If you’ve bought the recalled Skip Hop teething toy, you should stop using it immediately and “take it away from children,” the Consumer Product Safety Commission said.

Go to the Skip Hop recall website for instructions on how to dispose of the product and request a refund.

After review, Skip Hop said it will issue a gift card worth $12 or $14 in Canadian currency that can be used at any store belonging to The William Carter Company.

That includes Carter’s, Skip Hop, OshKosh B’gosh and Little Planet locations.

You can expect a gift card in two to three weeks.
