Milwaukee Brewers manager Pat Murphy is sticking by Kyle Harrison despite the left-hander’s recent struggles.

Harrison has gone through a difficult stretch since returning from a forearm injury, leading the Brewers to move him from the rotation to the bullpen. His first relief appearance did little to ease concerns, as he allowed nine hits and four earned runs in 3.2 innings against the Cincinnati Reds.
Murphy, however, believes Harrison can still turn things around. According to Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reporter Todd Rosiak, Murphy said his message to Harrison was simple: “We’ll get this straight. This will happen. We’re going through a rough patch.”

Murphy also pointed to Harrison’s velocity being up but said his command has suffered. The Brewers manager believes a lack of confidence could be playing a role in the pitcher’s recent problems.
“It’s an outgrowth of maybe lack of confidence, and it affects your physical a little bit,” Murphy said.

Harrison had been one of Milwaukee’s better starters earlier this season. He carried a 2.57 ERA through the end of June before his season began to take a different turn.
The 25-year-old missed 25 days with left forearm tightness before returning to the mound. Since then, he has allowed 17 earned runs over his last 7.1 innings, including nine earned runs in 3.2 innings against the Chicago Cubs on Aug. 31.
Harrison is now 10-4 with a 3.98 ERA, 1.29 WHIP, 134 strikeouts and 33 walks over 110.2 innings this season. The Brewers will need to determine how he fits into their pitching plans with the postseason approaching.
Milwaukee has already clinched a playoff spot and owns the best record in baseball at 93-56. That gives Murphy some room to work with Harrison, but the Brewers will still need their pitching staff in the best possible shape when October arrives.
