Riley Greene (HR, 3 RBIs), Tigers sweep reeling Rockies

Riley Greene homered and drove in three runs and the host Detroit Tigers completed a three-game series sweep by thumping the Colorado Rockies 8-1 on Sunday.

Greene’s two-hit game gave him seven for the series. He has four homers and 15 RBIs over his last eight games.

Spencer Torkelson had a solo homer and Kevin McGonigle supplied a two-run triple for the Tigers (70-79). John Peck scored a run and drove in another, while Zach McKinstry scored twice. Detroit, which has won four straight, finished off a 5-1 homestand.

Detroit starter Jackson Jobe (2-2) held the Rockies to one run on three hits in 6 1/3 innings. He walked one and struck out a season-high eight.

Adael Amador homered for the Rockies (55-94), who have lost seven straight. Colorado rookie starter Gabriel Hughes (0-8) gave up five runs and five hits in two innings while throwing 70 pitches.

The Rockies scored in the first on Amador’s long ball. He blasted a Jobe fastball over the right field wall.

Detroit took a 2-1 lead in the bottom of the inning. Colt Keith reached on a two-out ground-rule double before Greene lifted a curveball to the opposite field for his 20th homer of the season.

Detroit extended its lead to 5-1 in the second. Max Clark led off with a single and stole second. With one out, McKinstry drew a walk. Peck knocked in Clark with a single and McGonigle ripped a 3-2 pitch off the top of the right field wall for a triple, scoring both runners.

The Tigers took advantage of Zach Agnos’ wildness in the fourth to make it 7-1. He issued consecutive walks to McKinstry, Peck and McGonigle to begin the inning. Hao-Yu Lee hit a sacrifice fly to bring home McKinstry. After a fielder’s choice, Greene singled to score McGonigle.

Torkelson powered a Nick Frasso fastball over the left-center-field wall in the fifth for his 23rd homer of the season.
