Witnesses said speed may have been a factor in a fiery crash on Hazel Avenue late Monday that killed a driver trapped in the wreckage and injured two CHP officers who tried to pull him to safety, California Highway Patrol officials said.

The driver’s vehicle overturned in the violent wreck about 10:30 p.m. on southbound Hazel Avenue at Curragh Downs Drive before becoming engulfed in flames, trapping the motorist inside, officials with the California Highway Patrol’s East Sacramento office said.
The Sacramento County Coroner’s Office will release the driver’s name once family members have been notified.
Two responding CHP officers were injured in their unsuccessful attempts to free the motorist. The officers were initially treated at the scene before being sent to a hospital for further treatment. Both were later released.

It was unknown whether drugs or alcohol contributed to the fatal crash, said CHP officials. CHP logs indicated the vehicle was traveling at least 90 mph when it overturned between Fair Oaks and Gold River.
The crash blocked all southbound lanes of Hazel Avenue for about two hours as crews cleared the roadway.
