Comedian Matt Rife is ready to laugh at himself in Sacramento on Oct. 11. That’s when the 31-year-old stand-up artist will be performing at the Golden 1 Center.

Rife first came to prominence in 2022 after videos of his comic routines went viral on TikTok. He became known for his crowd work, where he would insult audience members in a back-and-forth ribbing style.
His 2023 Netflix stand-up comedy special, “Natural Selection,” sparked controversy when he opened the show with a joke about domestic violence. Following a mock-apology he posted online, Rife continued performing and went on to film a second Netflix special, “Lucid: A Crowd Work Special,” in 2024.
Originally from outside of Columbus, Ohio, Rife was introduced to stand-up comedy by his late grandfather. He often performed at Black comedy clubs in his hometown, and cites Black comedians as a big inspiration for his work, including Dave Chapelle.

Despite the controversy, Rife has a resilient mindset. He’s often quoted saying on social media, “If you can learn to laugh at the things that should make you miserable—including yourself sometimes—that’s how you win life.”
