Grocery item sold in California stores recalled for ‘serious’ health risk

Another grocery product has been added to the list of food recalls affecting California shoppers.

a cheese product because it contains an undeclared allergen, according to the California Department of Public Health.

The recalled cheese was sold at Whole Foods grocery stores in several states, including California.

What is Whole Foods Market recalling in California? Why?

On Friday, Sept. 11, Texas-based Whole Foods Market recalled its two Cabricharme cheese product because they contain egg lysozyme, a protein derived from egg whites that was not listed on the product label.

According to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, the undeclared allergen could pose a serious health risk to people with an egg allergy.

“People who have an allergy or severe sensitivity to eggs run the risk of a serious or life-threatening allergic reaction if they consume this product,” the FDA said in its Sept. 11 recall notice.

No illnesses had been reported as of the recall announcement, according to the FDA.

What does the recalled cheese look like?

The recalled cheese was cut and wrapped in plastic by the pound and sold with Whole Foods Market scale labels.

Consumers can identify the recalled product by checking the label for:

• Fromagerie Coop de Mean Cabricharme Raw Milk – Aged 60 days — PLU 57953
• Belgian Cabricharme — PLU 54670

Affected products will have “best if” or “used by” dates up to and including Oct. 7.

Where was recalled cheese sold?

The recalled cheese was sold at 18 Whole Foods Market stores in Arizona, California, Connecticut, Massachusetts, New Jersey, New York and Rhode Island, according to the FDA.

What should I do if I bought the recalled cheese?

If you purchased the recalled cheese, do not eat it.

“Customers who purchased the product do not need to return it but are urged to destroy it,” the FDA said. “Anyone who purchased the affected product may obtain a full refund with a valid receipt from place of purchase.”
