San Francisco 49ers radio broadcaster Greg Papa has been hospitalized since Sept. 7 with advanced heart failure and was facing the possibility of a heart transplant or other procedure, according to a published report.

Papa, 63, had been recovering from leukemia and complications after a bone marrow transplant in March. He previously spent 78 days hospitalized after both of his lungs collapsed, including time in an induced coma and on a respirator.
Papa told the Bay Area News Group that he had been diagnosed with cardiomyopathy, a disease of the heart muscle, in 2023. He said the condition complicated his treatment because some medications needed for his heart conflicted with his cancer treatment.
Papa told the San Francisco Standard that doctors at UCSF performed a diagnostic procedure Tuesday to evaluate his condition. He said doctors were evaluating several treatment options, including medication, a heart pump or a heart transplant, Papa said.

The hospitalization came as Papa prepared to return to KNBR. The station announced last week that he would host “Lunch With Papa,” a one-hour weekday program from noon to 1 p.m., alongside John Lund.
Papa’s previous KNBR show with Greg Silver was taken off the air during the summer.
Papa has served as the 49ers’ radio voice since 2019 and spent more than four decades broadcasting Bay Area sports. His career also included calling games for the Giants, Raiders and Athletics, as well as the Warriors early in his career.
