San Francisco Giants broadcaster Duane Kuiper has been diagnosed with throat cancer and began treatment last week at Stanford Medicine, he announced in a statement Sunday.

Kuiper, 76, said the illness was unrelated to the cancer he battled in 2021. He was expected to miss broadcasts Monday and Wednesday while undergoing treatment.
He said he was optimistic the cancer would be successfully treated and planned to return Tuesday and this weekend to celebrate longtime broadcast partner Mike Krukow as Krukow prepared to retire.
“I’m looking forward to returning Tuesday and this weekend to celebrate my partner, Mike Krukow, and his remarkable career,” Kuiper said.

Krukow, 74, planned to retire at the end of the season after 36 seasons in the Giants’ broadcast booth.
Krukow had said his inclusion body myositis, a progressive muscle disease, made it increasingly difficult to call games. The condition had limited him to studio work for road broadcasts, according to previous Bee reporting.
The former Giants pitcher had spent decades alongside Kuiper as half of the popular “Kruk and Kuip” broadcast duo.
