It’s still just September, and the Big 12 season is just getting started, but it’s already a make-or-break moment for both Deion Sanders and Dave Aranda.
Baylor (2-1) is playing well. It started the season with a tough loss to Auburn, coming inches away from the win, before tuning up against Prairie View A&M and Louisiana Tech. The Bears need their first 3-1 start since 2022, with a tough run coming up.
Colorado (2-1) has bigger issues. It came away with a thriller of a win over Georgia Tech in the opener, but couldn’t do anything right in a 41-7 loss to Northwestern. This can’t be another bad loss, or flashes of last year’s collapse will start to shine.

Why Colorado Will Win
The defense is playing okay. The pass D could be better, but the Buffaloes are holding up reasonably well against the run so far. What this bunch has to do, though, is take the ball away.
Colorado’s offense has a fumbling problem, but the defense has come up with four takeaways in the first three games. Baylor has even bigger turnover issues, giving it up seven times so far. Combine that with the Bears’ penalty problems 19 in the last two games, and Colorado might finally be on the right side of the mistake battle.
Why Baylor Will Win
The Colorado offense really isn’t working.
It sputtered against Georgia Tech in the opener until the final moments and only gained 348 yards with four turnovers against Northwestern. The Baylor defense brings tons of pressure and plenty of plays behind the line. Colorado quarterback Julian Lewis is good, but the Buffalo offense struggles when the offensive line isn’t a rock.

Is DJ Lagway ready to go? The Baylor quarterback is likely to come back this week, but it’s hardly a sure thing at the time this is written. Whether or not he’s available, the Bear defense will do the job against the Colorado offense in a battle that should lean more toward the low-scoring side, with both teams trying not to screw up.
