Spooky, scary beverages: 3 seasonal Sacramento bar pop-ups with Halloween brews

There’s something strange in the neighborhood — a handful of new themed bar pop-ups just in time for Halloween.

Three Sacramento favorites have embraced everything creepy and crawly over the next few weeks as the scariest holiday of the year approaches.

Fog machines, strobe lights and specialty drinks fill the capital region’s go-to seasonal celebrations, which return year after year as Halloween lovers consistently pack the bars throughout the month.

Here’s where Sacramento’s spookiest bars can be found in October (or sooner).

Tales of the Cursed Tomb at Trophy Club

Address: 630 K St., Suite 120 in downtown Sacramento

Dates and hours: Friday, Oct. 2 through Oct. 31; 5-11 p.m. Sunday through Thursday and 5 p.m. to 1:30 a.m. Friday and Saturday

Hidden inside the underground Tipsy Putt indoor mini-golf spot in Downtown Commons, the Trophy Club cocktail lounge is transforming for spooky season.

Coming off a ghostly “Phantom Parlor” theme last year, “Tales of the Cursed Tomb” will bring an ancient Egyptian, “The Mummy”-esque flair to the lounge’s annual pop-up.

“(Tales of the Cursed Tomb is) inspired by the discovery of an ancient tomb, and what happens when you disturb something that perhaps should have stayed buried,” said Jennifer Robinson, chief marketing officer for Tipsy Putt Brands, in an emailed statement. “Think archaeology, mummies, cursed artifacts and a glamorous expedition gone awry.”

Decorations, drinks and the overall story will immerse guests in the excavation experience, Robinson wrote.

For a more exclusive experience, Trophy Club will offer “the Private Expedition,” a seated tasting experience on Sunday, Oct. 4. The bartenders behind the seasonal cocktail menu share their inspiration and process for creating their drinks while guests get a miniature taste of each.

Advanced reservations are required, according to a social media post by the bar. Tickets are available on Trophy Club’s website and cost $40 per person.

Black Lagoon at The Snug

Address: 1800 15th St. in midtown Sacramento

Dates and hours: 4 p.m. to 2 a.m. daily, Sept. 29 through Nov. 1

The Snug will once again become the “Black Lagoon” for the Halloween season.

As the holiday approaches, lines around the midtown bar regularly wrap the building as guests hope to spend a night under draped spiderwebs and suspended skeletons. Flickering lights and moody hues set a haunted vibe, while Instagram-ready drinks flow throughout the month.

A skeletal mermaid-shaped cup returns every year, holding a different cocktail each time. The limited-edition cups are typically available for purchase, but don’t try stealing them — The Snug frequently puts cup thieves on blast on its social media.

Jet’s House of Horrors

Address: 1226 20th St. in midtown Sacramento

Dates and hours: 4 p.m. to 2 a.m. daily, now through Oct. 31

Being a bar with monthly rotating themes, Jet’s goes all-out for Halloween. This year, it is spending two months as the “House of Horrors,” through September and October.

Creepy dolls, oversized candy decor and horror movie memorabilia plaster the bar’s walls while specialty themed drinks range from sweet to truly spooky.

Drinks range from $13 to $20 and include a candy corn-topped shooter, a ghost marshmallow-garnished candy apple martini and a bright red drink inside a mock blood bag.
