There’s no denying that Jeremiah Smith is the best wide receiver in college football. The only real question is whether the incredible season he’s already having will result in a trip to New York to hoist the Heisman Trophy.

Based on today’s performance, the answer is getting closer and closer to “Yes.”
In just the first half of today’s game against Illinois, Smith had eight receptions for 150 yards and three touchdowns. He now has six touchdown receptions in 3.5 games and is on pace for close to 2,000 receiving yards.
Buckeyes fans are certainly excited right now and many believe that he’s destined to hoist the trophy later this year:
“Just remember when you watch Jeremiah Smith this year and his quest for the Heisman…. Eddie George had 314 yards against Illinois that really pushed his Heisman case that year!” one fan pointed out.
“Give Jeremiah Smith the Heisman Trophy,” another said bluntly.
“If Jeremiah Smith doesn’t win the Heisman this season, a non quarterback might never win it again,” wrote a third.

“Jeremiah Smith is winning the heisman and it’s not even remotely close,” declared another.
Inevitable or Hopeful?
A wide receiver tends to need a truly exceptional season to win the Heisman trophy. Unless he’s a multi-positional threat like Tim Brown or Travis Hunter, wide receivers tend to have a hard time receiving first-place votes.
When DeVonta Smith won it in 2020 during that pandemic-shortened season, had close to 100 receptions and over 1,500 yards plus 17 touchdowns in just 11 games. He would go on to boost those numbers in a big way during the College Football Playoff, finishing the season with 117 receptions for 1,856 yards and 23 touchdowns as he led the Crimson Tide to a national title over the Buckeyes.
That said, the odds are certainly trending towards him. He entered the day with +500 odds to win the prestigious trophy – just behind Ole Miss QB Trinidad Chambliss and Miami QB Darian Mensah.
