Ex-Dallas Cowboys QB loses announcing job after arrest: ‘focus on my health’

Former Dallas Cowboys quarterback Tony Romo’s career with CBS Sports is over.

CBS Sports said in a statement that the network and Romo “have mutually agreed to part ways.”

“We thank Tony for his contributions over the past nine years and wish him the best moving forward,” CBS Sports said.

Romo offered his own statement:

“I’m proud of what I accomplished at CBS Sports over the last nine years. I approached my role as a game analyst the way I’ve approached everything in my life — with a desire to win and be the best that I can be. I’m going to use this time to take a break, something I’ve never done before, and focus on my health and my family before moving on to my next opportunity. I am grateful for my time with CBS Sports and for the continued support of my family and friends, as well as the NFL community and fans.”

Romo was arrested July 23 in Wisconsin on suspicion of operating a vehicle while intoxicated, and he pleaded no contest on Sept. 1. He said in a statement after his plea that his alcohol use was tied to pain from multiple back surgeries during his career.

“Multiple back surgeries ended my career earlier than I expected and left me with constant, debilitating pain,” Romo said. “That pain led to a dependence on pain medication, and my efforts to get off those medications led to an over-reliance on alcohol.”

Romo has not appeared on NFL broadcasts through the first three weeks of the season. The 46-year-old has four years and $72 million remaining on a 10-year, $180 million contract he signed in February 2020, according to the Athletic.

“CBS Sports and Romo reached a financial settlement before Friday’s announcement, according to industry sources who spoke on condition of anonymity to describe ongoing deliberations,” the Athletic reported. “The two sides avoided going to court, indicating that Romo will probably be paid a good portion of the remaining money he was owed.”

Former Houston Texans defensive end JJ Watt has been filling in for Romo on CBS’s top NFL broadcast team with play-by-play announcer Jim Nantz and will continue to do so, the network said.

“JJ Watt will continue to partner with Jim Nantz and Tracy Wolfson on our lead NFL announce team for the rest of the season,” CBS Sports said. “All other teams remain the same, including Ian Eagle, Ross Tucker and Evan Washburn.”

Romo played 13 seasons with the Cowboys, completing 65.3% of his passes for 34,183 yards and 248 touchdowns. He finished his career with most of the franchise’s passing records, though he has been surpassed by current Cowboys starter Dak Prescott, who recently added Romo’s franchise passing TD record to his collection.
