Two cities in the U.S. considered among the safest are in the Sacramento area, according to a recent study by the consumer-driven financial information and advice firm SmartAsset.

Roseville was ranked 40 out of 333 midsize cities examined for their rates of violent crime, property crime, auto fatalities and natural disaster risk.
Roseville, in Placer County, has a population of just over 158,000 residents, according to the city’s official website.
West Sacramento was ranked 80th on SmartAsset’s list for 2026. Various listings for the Yolo County city, including U.S. Census data and World Population Review, put its population between approximately 56,000 and 57,000.
In compiling its 2026 rankings, SmartAsset stated it looked at cities with populations between 65,000 and 250,000.

It identified Broomfield, Colorado as the safest midsize city.
Little Rock, Arkansas ranked last because of its higher rates of property and violent crime as well as above-average number of traffic fatalities and higher natural disaster risk.
Here is a look at the numbers for Roseville
- Violent crime per 1,000 residents: 2.19
- Property crime per 1,000 residents: 14.2
- Auto fatalities per 100,000 residents: 8.2
- Disaster risk: Relatively moderate
In comparison, Broomfield, Colorado’s violent crime rate was 1.48 per every 1,000 residents. The property crime rate for the Colorado town was 18.56 per every 1,000 residents. Auto fatalities were 5.02 per every 100,000 residents.

- Violent crime per 1,000 residents: 2.94
- Property crime per 1,000 residents: 13.69
- Auto fatalities per 100,000 residents: 11.47
- Disaster risk: Relatively moderate
Other California cities that made the top 100 of midsize cities considered the safest included Thousand Oaks, Camarillo and South San Francisco.
