What Happened to Saquon Barkley? Why Eagles RB Is Not Playing vs Jaguars

Barkley has been a key part of the Eagles’ offense since joining the team, but his availability has become a concern early in the 2026 season. His absence will undoubtedly impact Philadelphia’s ground game against a Jacksonville team that entered the week with a 3-1 record.

Saquon Barkley Is Dealing With a Hamstring Injury

Barkley is out against Jacksonville because of a right hamstring injury suffered during Philadelphia’s 24-20 loss to the Los Angeles Rams on Oct. 4.

The running back sustained the injury early in the first quarter. He appeared to be limping after a six-yard run, went to the medical tent and subsequently headed to the locker room. Barkley finished the game with just two carries for eight yards and did not return.

The Eagles officially ruled him out for the Jaguars game on Friday after he missed practice throughout the week. Philadelphia also lost backup running back Tank Bigsby to a core muscle injury that required surgery, further reducing its options in the backfield.

With both players unavailable, Will Shipley is expected to lead the Eagles’ rushing attack against Jacksonville, with Dameon Pierce available to provide additional support.

Saquon Barkley’s Return Timeline Remains Uncertain

Barkley is considered week-to-week, and the Eagles have not announced a specific date for his return. NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport reported that the hamstring injury was not considered long-term, although his recovery will determine when he can resume playing.

Head coach Nick Sirianni said on Oct. 5 that Barkley would do everything possible to get back on the field. However, the running back was not fit enough to practice during the week leading up to the Jaguars game.

The Eagles have not confirmed whether Barkley will be available for their next game. But his game status for Week 6 will depend on his practice participation and progress in recovering from the hamstring injury. Until then, Shipley and the other available running backs will need to handle the workload.
