Florida State’s season didn’t end on Friday night, but its margin for error did. A 44-20 loss at Louisville dropped the Seminoles to 3-3 overall and 1-2 in the ACC. The next test is a big one. Florida State plays at Miami on Oct. 17 at Hard Rock Stadium, according to Wikipedia’s Miami schedule, in the rivalry known as the Florida Cup.

Florida State arrives in Miami Gardens with a 13-game road losing streak
The road record is the first hurdle. Tomahawk Nation noted that the Seminoles have now lost 13 straight games away from home, counting two neutral-site defeats. AP’s recap counted 11 straight true road losses.

Either way, Florida State hasn’t won away from Tallahassee in a very long time.
Miami comes in as one of the ACC’s best teams
The opponent is much stronger than Louisville. Miami opened the year in the top 10 of the coaches’ poll, and it recently beat Clemson convincingly.
The Hurricanes are hosting a star-studded list of recruits for the FSU game, including five-star receiver Brysen Wright. His father told 247Sports’ Steve Wiltfong that Miami is “killing it right now.”
That matters for FSU, too. A lopsided loss on that stage would hurt the Seminoles on the recruiting trail as well as in the standings.
What Florida State has to fix first: the way it responds to a big play
Friday’s game turned on one sequence. The Seminoles led 14-0, went for it on fourth-and-goal, and Louisville answered with a 97-yard touchdown run by Isaac Brown on the very next snap. Louisville then scored 35 straight points.

The lesson isn’t just about the fourth-down call. It’s about how the team handled the aftermath. Norvell called the performance “extremely poor,” and defensive lineman Rylan Kennedy said afterward that the team lost control after the long run. Fixing that is more of a mindset issue than a scheme issue. Miami will test it from the opening series.
Norvell’s future now sits with a new athletic director
The coaching situation adds another layer. In September, AP reported that Florida State fired athletics director Michael Alford and started a national search for his replacement. That means the person who ultimately decides Norvell’s fate may not be the one who hired him.
Columnist Mike Bianchi wrote in Yahoo Sports that another blowout would leave the Seminoles at 3-4 and Norvell needing close to a miracle finish.
What a realistic path looks like from here
My view: a win at Miami probably isn’t required to save the season, but a competitive game is. If Florida State stays within a possession into the fourth quarter, the conversation has something to build on. If it falls behind early and the game gets away, the school will have to decide how much more patience it has.
Three things to watch next week are run defense, since Louisville outgained FSU 438-190 after the stop, fourth-down decisions, and body language after the first big Miami play. None of those requires a major upset to improve.
They just require a team that responds differently from the one that showed up at Louisville.
