The Jacksonville Jaguars needed a new long snapper early in Sunday’s game in London, and they handed the job to defensive tackle DaVon Hamilton.

Ross Matiscik is questionable to return with a shoulder injury that appeared to happen on a punt after Jacksonville’s first possession. Hamilton has handled one snap against the Philadelphia Eagles so far, and it went off cleanly. The Jaguars led 7-0 early in the second quarter, but Philadelphia tied it on a Will Shipley touchdown with 8:46 left in the half.
DaVon Hamilton has done this before
This isn’t new territory for Hamilton. When Matiscik exited in the first quarter with a back injury against the Tennessee Titans last November, Hamilton took five snaps before Matiscik returned in the third quarter: an extra point, three punts and a field goal. All five were clean, and he made a tackle on one of the punts.
“It’s something I’ve been working on for about six years in the league, so it has been interesting,” Hamilton said after that game. He called it “definitely a dream that came true,” but added that it’s “definitely not something I want to do on a day-to-day basis.”

Matiscik came back for the second half that day. Jacksonville would love the same outcome here, because he isn’t an easy player to replace. He has earned Pro Bowl and All-Pro honors in each of the last three seasons, and the Jaguars signed him to a two-year extension in June. Only Tony Boselli and Jimmy Smith have more Pro Bowl selections in franchise history.
Until he’s cleared, every punt, field goal and extra point starts with a defensive tackle.
