Kalen DeBoer Questions Alabama Star’s Maturity After Loss to Georgia

The Alabama Crimson Tide still had a chance to get the ball back late against the Georgia Bulldogs on Saturday night before cornerback Dijon Lee committed a personal foul that effectively ended the Crimson Tide’s comeback hopes.

Head coach Kalen DeBoer

“We preach emotional maturity, and I really feel strong that across the board we have that with our team and didn’t, would’ve never expected that to happen,” DeBoer said of Lee throwing a punch. “You gotta give yourself a chance, and a year ago it happened the other way. The same situation, same time in the game, the opposite way, and you’re out there giving everything you got.

“You just got to give yourself a chance, and so emotional maturity is what it comes down to. We’ve been pretty good at that.”

Alabama had punted on fourth-and-19 while trailing by three and still had enough time to potentially force another Georgia possession and get the football back.

Instead, Lee got into a confrontation with Georgia wide receiver Craig Dandridge after the play. Both players pushed each other, but Lee reacted second and was flagged for the personal foul, giving Georgia an automatic first down.

The penalty allowed the Bulldogs to kneel out the remaining time and prevented Alabama from getting one final offensive possession.

DeBoer confronted Lee as the defensive back reached the sideline, visibly expressing his frustration with the cornerback’s decision.

Alabama also argued a possible defensive pass interference with around 3:30 left in the game and the score 20-17 in favor of Georgia, but DeBoer stopped short of blaming the officials for the Crimson Tide’s loss.

“We can’t put the game in the situation where the officials come into play,” DeBoer said. “We got to control the things we control.”

Ultimately, the loss dropped Alabama to 5-1 and marked its first defeat of the season. The Crimson Tide returns to action in Week 7 with a road game against Tennessee in Knoxville at 3:30 p.m. ET on Saturday.
