Aaron Rodgers now trails only two quarterbacks in NFL history: Tom Brady’s 737 TD passes and Drew Brees’ 608

Aaron Rodgers is still one of the first names that comes up whenever the conversation turns to the best passers in NFL history, and the Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback has the résumé to back that up.

The Green Bay Packers took him 24th overall in 2005, and once his three seasons behind Brett Favre were over, he built close to two decades of precise play that rarely gave the football away.

The 42-year-old owns four MVP awards, a Super Bowl XLV title with the game’s MVP honor, 10 Pro Bowl selections and four first-team All-Pro nods. Among qualified quarterbacks, he also holds the career records for passer rating at 102.2, interception rate at 1.4% and touchdown-to-interception ratio.

In Pittsburgh, the veteran has reunited with Mike McCarthy, the coach who guided him to that Super Bowl win in Green Bay, in what has turned into a farewell run. The four-time MVP already sits fifth all time in completions and passing yards, and the Indianapolis Colts’ visit to Acrisure Stadium gave him a shot at climbing a different list.

On Sunday, the Steelers quarterback hit Jaylen Warren with a short pass in the first quarter that Warren turned into an 80-yard touchdown. The score was the 580th touchdown pass of Rodgers’ career, postseason included, and it moved him past Peyton Manning for third place on the NFL’s all-time list, per NFL.

The two had been locked at 579 since Week 4, when Pittsburgh’s quarterback threw three touchdown passes in a loss to Cleveland, and that tie lasted only until the opening quarter against Indianapolis.

A one-yard touchdown connection with Pat Freiermuth in the second quarter then pushed the 42-year-old’s career total to 581. That leaves him trailing only Tom Brady, with 737 touchdown passes, and Drew Brees, with 608.

Closing a 27-touchdown gap on Brees could prove difficult for a passer who is 42 and nearing the end of his career, so third place is probably where he lands barring an extraordinary finish.

Pittsburgh’s next game comes in Week 6, when the Steelers travel to Raymond James Stadium to face the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on Sunday, Oct. 18.
