49ers Dealt More Bad News After Dre Greenlaw Suspension

The San Francisco 49ers have suffered another setback after linebacker Dre Greenlaw lost his appeal of a one-game suspension. NFL Network insider Mike Garafolo reported the decision on October 14, leaving San Francisco without a key defensive contributor for its next game.

Greenlaw’s suspension stems from an altercation during the 49ers’ 32-29 victory over the Seattle Seahawks on October 11. He was disciplined after a confrontation involving Seattle linebacker Ernest Jones IV.

The league’s decision means Greenlaw will serve the suspension without pay. Spotting a replacement at linebacker becomes more urgent with another player dealing with an injury.

Greenlaw has recorded 37 tackles through five weeks, ranking second on the team in that category. His absence removes an experienced presence from a defense that must now adjust its linebacker rotation.

Rookie Jaden Dugger is expected to take on a larger role, while veteran Nick Martin could be considered for a roster call-up. Fred Warner will also be important in helping organize the unit against Washington.

The suspension is not San Francisco’s only concern. Wide receiver Deebo Samuel is expected to miss a couple of weeks with a hamstring injury, according to head coach Kyle Shanahan.

Samuel’s absence could limit the offense’s versatility. His ability to contribute as both a receiver and a runner gives quarterback Brock Purdy another option when the offense needs to create plays.

The 49ers are scheduled to host the Washington Commanders on Monday, October 19. The matchup gives San Francisco limited time to reorganize its defense and adjust its offensive plans without Samuel.

Despite the setbacks, the 49ers enter the week with a 5-0 record. Maintaining that start will require the remaining players to absorb larger responsibilities, particularly at linebacker and receiver.

Greenlaw is expected to become eligible to return after the suspension, but San Francisco must first navigate Monday night’s matchup without him. His absence, combined with Samuel’s injury, creates a significant test for the undefeated team.
