The Liverpool winger has not traveled to Austria for the match, with head coach Andoni Iraola confirming that he remains unavailable after also missing Sunday’s Premier League defeat to Manchester City.

Why Isn’t Gakpo Playing?

Cody Gakpo was forced off during the first half of the Netherlands’ 2-1 victory over Serbia on September 27 after picking up an ankle injury.

The Dutch forward then withdrew from the national team, missing the Netherlands’ remaining two fixtures of the international break. He returned to Liverpool for further assessment by the club’s medical staff at the AXA Training Centre.

“They are not bad but it’s difficult to tell right now (when they will be back). We are taking it day to day. Really the three of them, I don’t know if it’s going to be Brentford or Villarreal.” pic.twitter.com/bPvR0QOA8n

Liverpool manager Andoni Iraola provided an update on Gakpo’s condition ahead of the Manchester City game on October 11, confirming that the winger would not be available. The coach suggested the injury was caused by a bad tackle and explained that Gakpo was working individually while dealing with the pain.

Speaking to reporters, Iraola said Gakpo had an ankle injury and added that the problem did not appear to be long-term. The club has been monitoring his progress daily rather than setting a fixed recovery deadline.

Gakpo then missed Liverpool’s 3-0 defeat to Manchester City and was also absent from the 23-man traveling squad for Wednesday’s Champions League meeting with LASK. According to Liverpool’s latest team news, the forward is sidelined alongside Alexander Isak and Dominik Szoboszlai.

When Will Gakpo Return?

There is some encouragement about Gakpo’s recovery, with Liverpool indicating that the ankle injury is not expected to keep him out for an extended period. However, the forward has yet to return to full team training.

Speaking ahead of the LASK match on Tuesday, October 13, Iraola explained that the club was taking the situation day by day, adding that he could not confirm whether the trio would be ready for the Premier League visit to Brentford on October 17, the Champions League match against Villarreal on October 20, or the league meeting with Brighton on October 25.

That leaves Gakpo’s next appearance uncertain, with the club prioritizing his recovery rather than rushing him back into action.
