Both crashes occurred within an hour in the eastbound lanes of Interstate 80 west of Air Base Parkway in Fairfield. The collision involving the officers happened about 11:45 p.m., the CHP Solano area office said in a news release.

Four officers in three patrol vehicles were at the scene of the fatal crash, with their emergency lights activated. Authorities had closed four eastbound lanes, diverting traffic into the far-right lane.

Two officers were seated inside a Dodge Charger patrol car when the Tesla, driven by a 22-year-old Sacramento man, passed through a pattern of flares and traffic cones and struck their vehicle, the CHP said.

Both officers were hospitalized in Fairfield and later released. Investigators had not determined whether the Tesla’s self-driving feature was activated at the time of the collision.

The Honda driver was taken to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead. Investigators did not believe alcohol was a factor in the fatal collision.

Following the collision involving the patrol car, authorities diverted all eastbound Interstate 80 traffic off the freeway at Air Base Parkway. The CHP’s Golden Gate Division Multidisciplinary Accident Investigation Team responded to investigate.

All eastbound lanes reopened about 8:30 a.m. Wednesday. Both crashes remained under investigation.
