Jose R. Borrego, 39, was found guilty on four counts of attempted murder with premeditation on a police officer, three counts of attempted murder, three counts of assault with a firearm, three counts of shooting at an occupied vehicle and four counts of assault with a firearm on a police officer, according to a news release from the Sacramento County District Attorney’s Office.
Borrego also was convicted of reckless evading of a police officer and being a convicted felon in possession of a gun.
On April 14, 2022, the Sacramento Police Department received reports of a man in a silver Nissan shooting into occupied vehicles as they headed down 65th Street in south Sacramento. Prosecutors said one of those shooting victims was an off-duty probation officer struck by gunfire in his right shoulder and taken to a hospital. Investigators collected 18 shell casings from the scene.
About 6:40 p.m. later that day, four officers with the department’s East Gang Enforcement Team in a marked patrol vehicle first spotted Borrego, police said.
Prosecutors said Borrego was driving a silver Nissan that ran a red light through an intersection in front of the officers. The Police Department later released video of what happened after the silver Nissan drove away on that rainy evening.
The patrol vehicle’s emergency lights and sirens were activated, and the officers tried to pull over the Nissan near 44th Street and 14th Avenue. Police said Borrego initially pulled over but quickly drove away and led the officers on a pursuit.
Prosecutors said Borrego drove at speeds more than 50 mph through a residential neighborhood and ran several stop signs.
Suspect found in a shooting stance
The Nissan eventually gained a considerable distance from the pursuing patrol vehicle. Near 44th Street and 23rd Avenue, the officers were driving around a corner when they saw Borrego had stopped and got out of the car, the video shows. Police said Borrego “ambushed” the officers, firing a handgun at them.
Prosecutors said the officers had found Borrego outside the car in a shooting stance holding a handgun with an extended ammunition magazine before firing the gun 16 times.

Gunfire struck the patrol vehicle at least five times, police said. The video shows one bullet struck the windshield on the driver’s side of the patrol vehicle. Police said one of the officers suffered minor facial injuries as a result of the shooting.
The video shows the patrol vehicle turn left into the front yard of a home as gunshots were fired at the officers. Police said one of the officers got out of the patrol vehicle and returned fire.
After the exchange of gunfire, Borrego got back in the car and drove away, police said. The video shows one of the officers tell police dispatchers the direction of the fleeing car. After telling dispatchers “we’re stable,” the officers got back in the patrol vehicle to look for the suspect.
Police manhunt
Dozens of Sacramento police officers, along with other local law enforcement agencies, searched the area for the suspect. A sheriff’s helicopter, aerial drones and armored vehicles were used in the search. The chase then continued north before the car headed east on Highway 50 to elude authorities.
Police said officers followed Borrego to Folsom, where the car was found abandoned. Officers found Borrego near the Natoma Light Rail Station in Folsom, where he was taken into custody and found to be in possession of a handgun and ammunition, according to police.
After he abandoned the Nissan, Borrego tried to change his appearance and lied about his name when the officers found him. Prosecutors said Borrego refused to follow orders before a police K-9 detained him.
Officers found a handgun loaded with an extended ammunition magazine along with empty extended magazine in a satchel Borrego was wearing, according to the District Attorney’s Office. Forensic testing revealed the shell casings found in the earlier shooting matched Borrego’s gun.
On Tuesday, Borrego remained in custody at the Rio Cosumnes Correctional Center near Elk Grove. He’s scheduled to be sentenced Nov. 6 in Sacramento Superior Court.
Prosecutors said Borrego faces a maximum sentence of 192 years and 4 months to life in prison.
