El Dorado County voters will have a new supervisor in the 4th District, as voters cast their ballots Tuesday on the vacated seat this primary election.

As of 8:25 p.m., the two frontrunners are Ted Gaines and Gina Posey, according to preliminary election results, with about 30% of votes counted according to county election officials. If no candidate has 50% of the vote plus one, the duo would go head-to-head this general election, pending certified results. El Dorado Supervisor Brooke Laine ran unopposed in the 5th District.
Supervisor Lori Parlin did not seek reelection in the 4th District, which covers most of El Dorado County’s northern communities, such as Rescue, Shingle Springs, Cold Springs, Pilot Hill and Georgetown. It does not include properties along Lake Tahoe.

Who are the candidates?
The 4th District candidates are Posey, Gaines, Greg Clark and Robert Deitz II.
Posey, who currently has 26% of the vote, has worked in business for more than 40 years, giving her some executive leadership experience, according to her campaign website. She served on the county’s Grand Jury from 2021 to 2023. Her top priorities include having a balanced budget, reconsidering tax revenue strategies and working on development issues.

Clark, who has about 19% of the vote, is a family law lawyer who is on the Gold Trail Union School District Board, according to his website. He wants to protect El Dorado County’s rural character, strength efforts to combat wildfire and support public safety.
Gaines has been on the California State Board of Equalization since 2018, where he represents the 1st District, according to his website. He is a self-proclaimed conservative who has owned and operated Gaines Insurance for more than 30 years. He currently has about 46% of the vote.
Deitz moved to El Dorado County with his wife in the late 1990s after visiting the Rubicon Trail, according to his website. He is a retired business owner who once worked on cybersecurity issues. He has about 8% of the vote, according to preliminary results.
