Mets Make Pitching Decision After Loss to Cardinals

The New York Mets have adjusted their rotation after a loss to the St. Louis Cardinals, pushing Christian Scott’s next start back one day. According to a post on X from Chelsea Janes, Austin Warren will start Wednesday’s game at Citi Field, while Christian Scott will take the mound Thursday against the Cardinals.

The move gives Scott an extra day of rest as New York continues to manage its pitching staff during a busy stretch of the season. The decision comes after the Mets opened their series against St. Louis with a disappointing defeat.

New York struggled to generate offense and could not keep pace with a Cardinals team that entered the matchup playing strong baseball. The loss added to the challenges the Mets have faced throughout much of the season.

Scott was originally lined up to start Wednesday, but the Mets decided to adjust the schedule. The right-hander remains an important part of the club’s plans, and the extra day allows him additional recovery time before facing the Cardinals.

Mets say Austin Warren will start Wednesday and expected Wednesday starter Christian Scott will start Thursday instead.

The 2026 season has provided valuable experience for the 26-year-old as he continues to establish himself at the major league level. The team sees him as one of the young arms capable of helping stabilize the rotation both now and in the future.

The Mets selected Scott in the fifth round with the 142nd pick of the 2021 Major League Baseball Draft. He made his professional debut in 2021 with the Florida Complex League Mets. The change also gives Austin Warren an opportunity.

The right-hander has handled several different assignments for New York this season. He has worked as a starter, reliever, and bulk-innings pitcher whenever the team has needed him.

Warren recently appeared in a key spot during the Mets’ road trip against the San Diego Padres. New York entered the late innings with a lead before San Diego rallied for a comeback victory.

Despite that setback, the Mets continue to trust Warren because of his ability to cover innings and adapt to different situations. Before returning home, New York finished a difficult West Coast trip with some positive results.

The Mets won a series against the Padres and showed improvement on both sides of the ball. Strong pitching performances and timely hitting helped the club close the trip on a positive note.

After securing a series win over the Padres over the weekend and enjoying an off day on Monday, the Mets’ offense went cold while Freddy Peralta turned in one of his roughest starts of the 2026 season. New York opened its six-game homestand with a 7-0 loss to the Cardinals in front of 35,175 fans at Citi Field.

With Scott now scheduled to start on Thursday, the Mets will look for a stronger performance as they try to even the series against St. Louis.
