Carl Wheaton Cacconie, 52, was apprehended by law enforcement about 9 a.m. Saturday and will appear before a Scottsdale court before being transported back to California for sentencing, according to a news release from the El Dorado County District Attorney’s Office.
“We never stopped fighting for justice in this case,” El Dorado County District Attorney Vern Pierson said in the release. “ While nothing can erase the harm caused, we hope today’s outcome offers a measure of peace to Cacconie’s survivor and family, knowing that he will now finally be held accountable and sentenced for his crimes.”
On July 17, Cacconie was convicted by an El Dorado County jury of six counts of lewd acts with children under the age of 14 that took place in 2023.
How was he found?
Cacconie did not report to his sentencing hearing Aug. 25 after he was released from custody on $1 million bail after surrendering his passport and being fitted with a monitoring device, the District Attorney’s Office said.
When Cacconie’s monitoring device stopped transmitting Aug. 17, the District Attorney’s office said in social media post that it made “continuous objections” to his release on bail. Family reported him missing Aug. 22 and said Cacconie left behind his phone, wallet and a suicide note, Saturday’s news release said.
Cacconie was apprehended in a multi-agency investigation involving officials from the FBI Phoenix Desert Hawk Fugitive Task Force, Maricopa County Sheriff’s Office and U.S. Border Patrol agents.

“Carl Cacconie underestimated law enforcement and our commitment to ensuring justice for those impacted by his crimes,” FBI Sacramento Acting Special Agent in Charge Brian Tosh said. “Our task force officer with the El Dorado County District Attorney’s Office relentlessly pursued leads and worked closely with FBI Sacramento, FBI San Francisco, and FBI Phoenix field offices to ensure every possible tool, technique, and resource was leveraged to locate and safely apprehend this convicted criminal.”
Judge faces criticism for allowing bail
Judge Michael K. McLaughlin, who oversaw Cacconie’s trial, has faced criticism for allowing him to go on bail, despite a request from the District Attorney’s Office to keep him in custody, according to reporting from KCRA 3.
Recently, the female victim in the case posted a GoFundMe page to raise money to increase the reward amount for capturing Cacconie from $1,000 to $5,000. The GoFundMe had received over $3,000 as of Saturday morning.
The page was first reported on by KCRA. In the story, the station spoke to the victim, who said she was upset Cacconie was released on bail.
“I think about it every day. I mean, even when I go to sleep at night, it’s like something that I’m in fear (of])every day. It’s not a good feeling,” she said last week, according to KCRA 3. “I blame the justice system. Unfortunately, because they were supposed to have my back through this all. So, I feel like that was who else can I blame besides them, you know.”
