“Looks like his plan was fueled by poor choices and ended with a full tank of charges,” a spokesperson for the department wrote. “As we like to say … hooked and booked.”
Officers on the graveyard shift had been watching for the suspect in a string of late-night and early-morning gasoline thefts when they conducted a traffic stop around 3 a.m., Rocklin Police Department Capt. Chad Morris said in an interview. Officers immediately smelled an “overwhelming odor of gasoline” coming from the vehicle and identified the driver as a 39-year-old Antelope man on probation.
Given the driver’s probation status, officers searched the vehicle and found burglary tools and multiple partially filled gas cans. They arrested the 39-year-old on suspicion of the fuel thefts, according to the department’s statement.

The 39-year-old previously was arrested on multiple charges, including possession of stolen property and possession of a stolen vehicle, Morris said.
The case remained under investigation Thursday afternoon, and Morris encouraged anyone who believes they experienced a fuel theft in the area to come forward and file a police report.
