“Absolutely, it’s sickening” – A’ja Wilson admits that pettiness fuels her game

No matter how talented an athlete is, transitioning into the professional world and establishing a presence among the best of the best takes time. Naturally, cementing a GOAT case is an even longer process. However, A’ja Wilson has seemingly cracked the code before even completing an entire decade in the WNBA.

In just nine seasons, the eight-time All-Star has led the Las Vegas Aces to three championships, winning Finals MVP honors twice. Wilson has collected four MVPs, three DPOYs and two scoring titles. And if her 2026 campaign continues at its current pace, Wilson could add a fifth MVP to her resume while averaging 26.0 points, 9.4 rebounds and 2.0 blocks per game.

What makes A’ja even more dangerous is the mindset behind her dominance. Much like some of the greatest competitors in sports history, she has admitted that criticism, doubt, and even pettiness can bring out another level in her.

“Absolutely, it’s sickening. It’s really bad how much pettiness fuels me, but yes,” the 30-year-old

You can talk about anything; can find something in it.”

A’ja finds reasons to push buttons

Unlike most WNBA legends, Wilson has never shied away from claiming she could also dominate in the NBA. A prime example of that came when she boldly proclaimed her dominance over the New York Knicks’ Josh Hart in a potential 1v1 showdown.

Moreover, A’ja’s performance has been so utterly comprehensive in women’s basketball that legends like John Salley have even admitted that the four-time MVP could “destroy” NBA players.

And despite that kind of praise and confidence, Wilson admitted that she constantly searches for criticism to fuel her motivation and zeal to win.

Thus, she revealed that when fans or analysts on social media criticize or doubt her unnecessarily, A’ja takes it as another opportunity to prove them wrong. Put simply, skepticism doesn’t diminish her morale; rather, it helps Wilson raise her standards and remind everyone of her true talent.

“Like, I don’t like the way you didn’t use punctuation in your tweet. I’m mad. Anything!” Wilson added before bursting into laughter. “People be testing me, and I love to let them know that I test back. I like to push buttons, too.”

Wilson could find new reasons to get fired up

Ironically, despite everything Wilson has achieved, the tendency to drag her name through the mud hasn’t disappeared.

The fact that she decided to sit out the 2026 FIBA World Cup as a precautionary measure to safeguard her health for the upcoming WNBA playoffs has led to online theories that her decision was an intentional attempt to throw younger players under the bus at a time when international competition is peaking.

So, for someone who looks forward to using criticism as motivation, the rest of the WNBA should be intimidated by what A’ja would produce in the coming weeks. Will Wilson be able to lead the Aces to the top of the WNBA again? Remains to be seen. At least, she has all the reasons to take her into the next tier.
