An AI-generated bomb threat that delayed classes at Wheatland Union High School in Yuba County Tuesday morning was determined to be a hoax, police and school officials said.

The Wheatland Union High School District was notified just before 6 a.m. of the anonymous threat, Superintendent Nicole Newman said in a letter to families. Wheatland police learned of the threat early Tuesday and searched the exterior of the campus, finding nothing suspicious.
Still, district officials said they were treating the threat seriously. Classes were delayed from the standard 8:15 a.m. start time to 8:50 a.m. to allow school administrators and law enforcement to fully check the campus before students arrived.
Additional law enforcement officers were also called to the school for the day, officials said.

The anonymous AI-voiced threat was “consistent with a pattern of hoax threats that have targeted schools across the country,” Newman’s letter to parents read.
Wheatland police were investigating the incident. Anyone with information was asked to call the department at 530-633-2821.
