Spain topped Argentina, 1-0, in the FIFA Men’s World Cup Final at Metlife Stadium in New Jersey on Sunday.
While Spain celebrated its win in epic fashion, many of Argentina’s players (save for Lionel Messi) were accused of showing terrible sportsmanship on the field. A fight broke out on the field immediately following the final whistle, while some of Argentina’s players appeared to be getting physical.
The sports world is ripping Argentina’s team for showing terrible sportsmanship following the final whistle on Sunday.
Argentina faces backlash for behavior after loss
“They didn’t know how to win on the field and have shown an absolute lack of dignity off it,” one critic wrote.
“Leandro Paredes should be banned from international football for life viciously assaulting Spanish players after the final whistle. Indefensible thuggery and criminality,” one fan added.

“This is not sportsmanship, it’s just violence. Shame on Argentina for the way they have behaved and played throughout this World Cup tournament,” one fan added.
“Argentina’s exhibition of bad sportsmanship continued after the game. They’ll be remembered for their behavior fro a long time to come,” one fan added.
A top Argentina newspaper, meanwhile, praised the team for their conduct.
“As never before, the Argentine team displayed, both on and off the field, a range of values that are rare these days. From the pitch and beyond, they gave several lessons and showed the face of a country that we would like to see away from the football pitch,” the paper wrote.
“A team that was polite and respectful, despite a few unfortunate isolated incidents in the last match; that didn’t speak ill of its rivals or try to justify its own mistakes by blaming others.”
