Arne Slot Reveals Management Priorities After Snubbing ‘Great Honor’

Former Liverpool manager Arne Slot has made it clear that he will only return to club management after explaining why he turned down the “great honor” of being considered by the Netherlands men’s national team.

Slot has been out of work since he was unceremoniously sacked by the Reds at the end of May after a disappointing fifth-placed finish. The Dutch coach had steered Liverpool to the club’s second ever Premier League title just one year before, and remains one of the more highly sought-after free agents on the managerial market.

Saudi Pro League side Al Ahli were reportedly prepared to offer Slot a lucrative contract to replace the recently departed Matthias Jaissle only for the 47-year-old to turn them down. It has now been confirmed that the Dutch soccer association also received a rejection from their countryman.

“Over the past few weeks, and particularly in recent days, various reports have appeared regarding the vacancy with the Netherlands national team, suggesting that I had withdrawn from the process following protracted negotiations, including on salary and the duration of the contract. That speculation is incorrect. We simply never reached that stage in the discussions,” Slot declared in a statement published by VI.

The former Feyenoord boss confirmed that contact had been made with a national team in search of a new manager after Ronald Koeman’s post-World Cup exit. “That is only to be expected when you are approached for an important position and want to gain a better understanding of the role and the expectations,” Slot explained. Yet, his priority lies in the club game.

Slot Sets Out Club Path

“At this stage of my career, I’d prefer to be out on the training pitch with my players every day. That’s simply not possible in the same way with a national team,” Slot outlined.

In between major tournaments, the job of coaching a country is incredibly different to the demands of club soccer. Even with the newly expanded international break this coming autumn, national team managers get no more than four consecutive games with their players at any one time, whereas club bosses are with their players for months and mountains of matches at a time.

Slot described this preference of managing a club over any country as “why I chose not to continue the discussions and not to enter into negotiations about what a potential contract might look like.”

“I have enormous respect for the national team and for the KNVB,” he was keen to add, “and I can only speak positively about the professional manner in which the discussions took place that week. For now, I believe that club soccer still has a lot to offer me.

“It would be a great honor to represent my country as national team manager one day. It just wasn’t the right time for me.”

Which Clubs Could Arne Slot Take Over?

There are currently no vacant managerial positions in the Premier League for Slot to take, but it’s only a matter of time before there will be some upheaval. Nine different clubs (almost half the division) have had a change in the dugout over the summer and that turnover is expected to continue once the competition begins.

As well as England, clubs from Germany and Italy have reportedly reached out to Slot, while there was briefly talk of a return to the Dutch Eredivisie before his Liverpool exit had even been confirmed. Ajax were also rebuffed.

Slot’s final season at Liverpool cast a long shadow but a wider look at his managerial tenure paints a flattering picture for a double league champion in two different countries with clubs who weren’t their division’s undisputed apex predator.
