Trevor Lawrence did not hide the plan once the Jacksonville Jaguars got to England. “A big part of our game plan is to give him opportunities with the ball,” the quarterback said Friday of Bhayshul Tuten, the second-year player who has become Jacksonville’s early answer at running back.

The grading backs up the quarterback. According to PFF, Tuten’s 90.3 overall grade through Week 4 is the highest on the Jaguars’ offense, and his 89.1 rushing grade covers 66 run snaps. He has 277 yards on 60 carries in the first four starts of his career, 14th in the NFL, for an offense averaging 117.3 rushing yards per game. Here are three expectations for Sunday against Philadelphia, a 9:30 a.m. ET kickoff that comes three hours after the Publix Tailgate Show begins back home.
A season-high 18 or more carries
Tuten’s carry totals have gone 15, 13, 15 and 17, with the 17 coming last week in Cincinnati. “Every week he has gotten better and better, and he has ran it better and better,” Lawrence said of Tuten’s progress. The opponent adds to the volume case. Philadelphia went 0-for-12 on third down in its loss to the Rams, and its own backfield is down to Will Shipley, the newly signed Dameon Pierce and practice-squad call-up Carson Steele, so Jacksonville should have the ball plenty.
Chris Rodriguez Jr. (26 carries) and Ameer Abdullah (10) will take some of the work, and Tuten has yet to reach 20 carries in a game. He has also caught all seven of his targets for 54 yards. With Philadelphia’s run game in poor shape, the Jaguars are the side more likely to control the clock.
More than 73 rushing yards for the first time
He has finished with 66, 65, 73 and 73 yards, a narrow band for a back averaging 4.6 per carry. The Eagles allow 122.0 rushing yards per game, 23rd in the league, and opponents have 488 yards on 121 carries against them, 4.0 per attempt. The Rams’ Kyren Williams gained 80 on 16 carries last week. PFF charges Philadelphia with 40 missed tackles through four games.

The resistance is in the middle. Defensive tackle Jordan Davis has a 77.8 run-defense grade from PFF, fourth among interior linemen according to the Eagles’ website, and linebacker Jihaad Campbell has a team-high 37 tackles. Edge rusher Jonathan Greenard is questionable after not practicing all week. “It kind of goes back to that attacking mentality that we talk about with the run game,” offensive coordinator Grant Udinski said Thursday of that front.
At least one rushing touchdown
Tuten has two touchdowns, and he had two more called back by penalties in the first half at Cincinnati, including a 44-yarder erased by holding. Philadelphia has allowed seven rushing touchdowns in four games. Three came last week, two by Williams in the fourth quarter and one by Puka Nacua.
The competition is in his own backfield. Rodriguez has two touchdowns, including a 25-yard score against the Bengals that is Jacksonville’s longest run of the season. Jacksonville drew 13 flags in the 22-17 Bengals win, and a cleaner day near the goal line gives Tuten his best chance at a score that counts.
