Bills Are Facing a Risky Call at Wide Receiver for Rams Showdown

Buffalo Bills wide receiver DJ Moore (shoulder) may be the offense’s biggest variable Monday night against the Los Angeles Rams. Moore is officially questionable, and Locked On Bills host Joe Marino and guest Kyle Trimble each raised the possibility that sitting him could offer the better long-term outcome after he aggravated the injury in Week 4.

Trimble, a Banged Up Bills injury analyst who holds a doctorate in physical therapy, said Moore’s left AC joint sprain has become a management issue after he exited early against Detroit in Week 2, played through it the following week and then could not return against New England. Trimble’s preference was to keep Moore out against Los Angeles rather than risk further damage while Buffalo remains on the West Coast.

The decision carries immediate consequences because wide receiver Josh Palmer (shoulder) has already been ruled out. That leaves quarterback Josh Allen with less margin for error in a matchup Marino expects to demand offensive efficiency and explosive plays. The official injury report also lists Moore as questionable; he did not practice Thursday or Friday.

Marino argued the Bills cannot allow tight end Dalton Kincaid and wide receiver Khalil Shakir to disappear for long stretches, particularly if Moore is unavailable or limited. Marino predicted at least five receptions for Kincaid, saying Buffalo should use more play-action and move Allen’s launch point to create intentional opportunities for the tight end.

Running back James Cook also factors into the contingency plan. Marino expects Buffalo to challenge the Rams’ front with its running game and predicted Cook and Allen would combine for at least four touchdowns. That is an ambitious projection, but the larger point is clear: The Bills need their core offensive pieces involved with more consistency if Moore cannot handle his usual role.

Moore’s game status will shape more than the receiver rotation. If he plays, Buffalo must decide whether his shoulder can withstand a full workload; if he sits, Kincaid, Shakir, Cook, and the rest of Allen’s available targets will carry a larger share of the offense.

Bills News and Notes

– Defensive lineman Ed Oliver (knee) is out, removing one of Buffalo’s interior pass-rush options against Rams quarterback Matthew Stafford. The Bills have generated pressure at a strong rate, Marino said, but need that pressure to help a secondary he believes has struggled with communication.

– Cornerback Dee Alford (ankle) and defensive lineman Landon Jackson (knee) are questionable. Trimble said Alford appeared to be moving reasonably well in practice and projected him to play, while Jackson’s two full practices after his knee injury point toward availability.
