The Sac-Town Rodeo returned to Cal Expo on Saturday for its second year, bringing bull riding, bronc riding and mutton busting to Sacramento while raising money for the Firefighters Burn Institute.

While this year is only the event’s second, Diamond Productions has been hosting bull riding events across Northern California since 1995. According to event organizers, the popularity of last year’s event allowed organizers to expand from one day to two.
The rodeo will continue on Sunday with doors opening at 3:30 p.m., pre-rodeo events starting at 4:30 p.m. and opening ceremonies at 5:30 p.m. Tickets are available at the rodeo’s website.

The event aims to serve as a tribute to Western traditions while also serving as a fundraising event for the Firefighters Burn Institute. The institute, a nonprofit organization founded by Sacramento Fire Captain Cliff Haskell in 1973, sought to create a specialized burn unit for the region after a plane crash that killed 23 people and burned many others at Farrell’s Ice Cream Parlor.
The events include bull riding, which is where a rider must stay on a bull for eight seconds minimum while holding on with just one hand; bronc riding, in which riders aim to stay on a bucking bronco for eight seconds; and mutton busting, in which young children wearing protective gear hold onto the back of a sheep for as long as they can.
