Cleveland Browns Rookie Wide Receiver KC Concepcion Trends Toward Playing in Week 6

Cleveland Browns rookie wide receiver KC Concepcion was knocked out of the Week 5 loss against the New York Jets after a devastating hit from safety Minkah Fitzpatrick. He suffered a helmet-to-helmet hit in the first quarter while attempting to make a reception. His head hit the turf after the crushing hit, and he was down for a few moments.

Eventually, Concepcion was assisted to the sidelines by the training staff, before he was whisked away to the locker room, and eventually ruled out for the remainder of the game. While Fitzpatrick was flagged 15 yards for hitting a defenseless receiver, the penalty for the Browns was way more, losing one of their best pass catchers.

Head Coach Todd Monken Wasn’t Angry About hit

Browns fans took to social media immediately after the hit, slinging mud at the former Pittsburgh Steelers defensive back. But, first-year head coach Todd Monken didn’t believe that Fitzpatrick was a dirty player, and said it was a “bang-bang play”. It said it was unfortunate the injury “happened to our guy”, and that, sadly, it is part of the game.

His words about Fitzpatrick’s might be true, but he was a member of the Steelers when he hit and injured former running back Nick Chubb, who recently retired as a member of the Browns, in a Monday Night Football game back in 2023. That hit by Fitzpatrick caused Chubb to have what essentially amounted to a career-ending injury, as he was never close to the same.

What Happens if Concepcion Cannot Play in Week 6?

Concepcion was listed as a limited participant in practice on Wednesday, so there appears to be a possibility that he can go in Week 6 against the Baltimore Ravens. But, what happens if he cannot play?

Fellow rookie wide receiver Denzel Boston would conceivably see more targets should Concepcion remains sidelined. In addition, veteran Jerry Jeudy is certain to see more snaps and targets, too.

In Week 5, in the wind and rain of MetLife Stadium, we saw Boston, Jeudy and wide receiver Isaiah Bond each saw seven targets apiece. Boston finished with three receptions for 46 yards and a touchdown, while Jeudy had three grabs for 19 yards. Bond surprised with a team-best 74 yards on three catches, but he also had a key drop in the fourth quarter which could have extended a scoring drive.

In addition, tight end Harold Fannin Jr. had four targets, but just one catch for four yards. We’ll chalk it up to the weather, and he should rebound in a big way against the Ravens, who are just so-so defending opposing tight ends.
