The Portuguese captain has spent years carrying the weight of the greatest of all time debate on his shoulders, and most of the people who’ve actually shared a pitch with him stopped arguing a long time ago. The noise tends to come from the outside.
For Ronaldo, it’s become background sound at this point, and that came through clearly at the pre-match press conference before Portugal’s Round of 16 clash with Spain at the FIFA World Cup on Monday. When questions about his future came up again, he was ready to shut them down.
“I will retire when I want, not when you want,” Ronaldo said, via Fabrizio Romano. “Whether I play or I stay on the bench, the influence will not change.”

Ronaldo also made clear that the people pushing the retirement narrative are wasting their effort because none of it has slowed him down before. The criticism keeps coming, he acknowledged, but it stopped carrying real weight a long time ago. He’s made his peace with it.

The Portuguese captain pushed back on the idea that this World Cup defines his legacy. Winning it or falling short won’t change what he’s already built, in his view. He said he’s grateful for everything the game has given him and is focused on enjoying what’s left of the ride rather than worrying about what anyone else thinks.

Portugal Face Spain in a Tough Round of 16 Test
On the field, Ronaldo remains one of the most-watched players at this tournament. Every opponent that steps up against Portugal builds its defensive plan around him first. Even after being the oldest striker out there, he’s still the threat teams lose sleep over.
Spain, though, present a different kind of problem. They haven’t given up a single goal in the competition and just picked up their first World Cup knockout stage win since lifting the trophy in South Africa in 2010. Getting past them is going to take something special.
For Portugal to advance, Ronaldo will need to do what he’s always done in moments like this – find a way when the game demands it most.
