The Del Oro Golden Eagles are headed into league play in strong form but still have work to do with a tough slate in the Sierra Foothill League ahead.

They capped their non-league schedule on Friday with a 41-20 victory over Vanden of Fairfield, thoroughly outplaying the Vikings who scored a touchdown late and had another scoring drive aided by penalties, including a personal foul that negated a third-down stop pass interference penalty deep in their own territory.
“I was proud of our guys for protecting the nest,” Del Oro head coach Josh Parry said. “There’s some discipline things we got to clean up, but that’s football.”
The Eagles scored touchdowns on their first four possessions and their defense held firm throughout. They took a 34-12 lead into halftime. After failing to convert a fake punt on their fifth series, they scored a defensive touchdown moments later when senior linebacker Ty Suave returned a fumble 60 yards for a score.
Junior receiver Chase Carmazzi scored two touchdowns in the first half, including a 64-yarder on the first snap of the game. Running back Brennan Gibbs and H-back Landen Parry scored touchdowns, while Parry added a diving interception at middle linebacker. Gibbs scored a second touchdown early in the fourth quarter.
Pherone Oats scored the first two touchdowns for Vanden, though both extra points were blocked.
Carmazzi’s speed was a threat throughout the night. He’s a favorite target of 6-foot-4 quarterback Grayson Haugen, who found Carmazzi in the corner of the end zone on a fade pattern in the second quarter that Carmazzi caught with one hand.

But it was Carmazzi running past the Vanden secondary on the first snap of the game that got things going.
“That sets the tone, especially coming home, getting the crowd into it,” Josh Parry said. “That gets the offense confident.”
The packed crowd on Del Oro’s campus had plenty to cheer for. The Eagles improved to 4-0 while the team’s band and jam-packed student section provided energy throughout the night.
Del Oro is hoping to improve on last year when they entered the CIF Sac-Joaquin Section playoffs as the No. 3 seed in Division II but the lost to league rival Rocklin in the first round of the playoffs after beating them three weeks prior.
The Eagles have won their last two games by combined scores of 85-26, but will face Oak Ridge next, who sit at 2-1 and will be coming off a bye week. Oak Ridge’s lone defeat came to Fresno power Central East on Sept. 4.
Vanden, which reached the semifinals of the Division III playoffs last season, fell to 3-1, and next week will host Pioneer of Woodland.
