When the Miami Dolphins drafted Kyle Louis, many thought he could be a versatile piece for their defense.

On Monday, they began using their Swiss Army knife at a different position.
Louis worked with the safeties during individual and team drills at Monday’s practice, according to South Florida Sun-Sentinel Dolphins reporter David Furones. Louis was a high school safety who transitioned to linebacker at Pittsburgh.
“Just having all these different perspectives from these different positions, it’s helped me see the bigger picture,” Louis said, according to Furones. “Instead of just seeing things through a straw, I’m actually seeing the purpose behind everything.”
Louis has history playing at safety
Miami drafted Louis as a linebacker. However, he is a bit undersized for the position at 6 feet tall and 225 pounds.
At East Orange Campus in New Jersey, Louis played both linebacker and safety. He recorded 118 total tackles, 32 tackles for loss, two forced fumbles and one interception while helping lead his team to an undefeated 13-0 record and the North Jersey Regional Championship.

As a safety, Louis has decent size while still consistently affecting plays at the line of scrimmage. During his final two seasons at Pitt, Louis recorded 182 tackles, 10 sacks and 24 tackles for loss.
In addition to his production as a linebacker, Louis also chipped in six interceptions and forced two fumbles during that span. His versatility will give the Dolphins the flexibility to use him in big nickel packages, which replace the traditional slot cornerback with a bigger defender, such as a safety or linebacker. If Miami wanted to, it could also line Louis up at weak-side linebacker.
This year is a transitional season for the Dolphins under first-year head coach Jeff Hafley and general manager Jon-Eric Sullivan. After parting ways with several veterans, the front office decided to sign or acquire younger players who could be part of their rebuild.
Having Louis cross-train at linebacker and safety could create unique matchups for a Dolphins defense that is looking to be physical and attack.
