After months of unsuccessful negotiations, the Elk Grove Unified School District is moving toward using eminent domain to acquire land for the planned Suncreek Middle and High School campus in Rancho Cordova.

The district spent months trying to purchase the according to a news release issued Wednesday, before considering using eminent domain — the legal process that allows public agencies to acquire private property for public use while paying the owner just compensation.
“This is not the district’s preferred approach, and it is one that is being brought forward only after careful consideration and exhaustion of these negotiation efforts,” the release said.
EGUSD’s Board of Trustees will consider adopting a resolution of necessity at its Aug. 4 meeting, according to the release. The resolution is the first formal step in the eminent domain process.

According to on the district’s website, the schools are planned to be located on the same site southeast of the intersection of Rancho Cordova Parkway and Chrysanthy Boulevard, near the Kavala Ranch home development and other new housing areas.

Sunrise Elementary, Cypress Grove Elementary and McGarvey Elementary are planned to feed into the middle and high school, though final boundaries will depend on continued growth in the area, according to the document. The area is part of Rancho Cordova’s rapidly expanding SunCreek planning area, which includes plans for a middle and high school campus.

“We remain fully committed to this site. We know it is the right one for our students and our community, and we do not want to see continued delays,” the release said.
