Fire grows, evacuation orders issued

Update, 1:56 p.m.:

As of 1:53 p.m., the Plaskett Fire had burned approximately 80 to 100 acres at a moderate rate of spread, according to Watch Duty.

An evacuation order was issued for zone MRY-F036, while evacuation warnings were issued for zones MRY-F035 and MRY-F037, according to Watch Duty.

Vegetation fire grows into second Big Sur wildfire

As crews continued to battle the Timber Fire in Big Sur on Wednesday, a second fire broke out along the scenic coastline, north of the San Luis Obispo-Monterey county line.

At around 9:41 a.m., fire resources were dispatched to the scene of a reported vegetation fire north of Gorda off Forest Road 23S10, east of Los Burros Road, according to fire tracker app Watch Duty.

Named the Plaskett Fire, it grew from around 10 acres at 10:09 a.m. to 50 acres by noon, according to Watch Duty.

At 10:25 a.m., five air tankers and three helicopters were assigned to the fire, and by 10:52, a load of smokejumpers — wildland firefighters who parachute into remote areas to contain wildfires — were requested along with five hand crews, according to Watch Duty.

The fire had the potential to burn 500 acres, according to air attack.

According to Cal Fire’s online tracker, the cause of the fire remains under investigation.

Timber Fire continues to spread after 2 weeks

Meanwhile, about 30 miles to the north, the Timber Fire continued to blaze through wilderness areas along the Big Sur coast.

Overnight, the fire grew by nearly 2,000 acres as containment dropped from 26% to 23%, forcing evacuation orders to expand again.

As of the latest Cal Fire report on Wednesday morning, the fire had burned 17,817 acres.

Evacuation orders are in effect for eleven zones where the fire poses an “immediate threat to life,” and warnings are in place in 22 zones, a slight increase from Tuesday in both categories.
