A former special education teacher with the Woodland Joint Unified School District who was charged with abusing a student accepted a plea agreement Thursday in a Yolo County courtroom.

Rebecca Lynne Wiley was charged with misdemeanor counts of child abuse and battery stemming from a January 2025 incident while she taught special education at Rhoda Maxwell Elementary School. The incident was first reported by the Davis Enterprise in December.
Wiley grabbed a 5-year-old autistic child hard enough to leave a bruise and “slammed him on the ground,” in two separate incidents, the child’s mother, Woodland resident Julie Peters, told The Davis Enterprise last year.
Wiley was placed on administrative leave shortly after the incident was reported, and the school district and Woodland Police Department investigated the allegations. She was charged in October and pleaded not guilty in November.

Wiley worked for the Woodland district from August 2022 to February 2024 and again from August 2024 until she was placed on leave following the incident, according to the Enterprise.

Wiley, who was not present in court, accepted the plea through her attorney, Steven Plesser. Yolo Superior Court Judge Catherine Rayhill accepted the plea.
Under the agreement, Wiley pleaded no contest to misdemeanor simple battery, and the child abuse charge was dismissed.
Wiley agreed to spend 15 days in jail and one year on probation, pay a $1,040 fine, take an anger management course and have no contact with the victim. Her fine payments were capped at $150 per month. She was scheduled to report to jail Oct. 15.
