A firefighter was injured after coming into contact with a live power line that fell on him while he was battling a North Sacramento structure fire on Monday afternoon.

Sacramento Fire Department crews responded just after 2 p.m. to the fire in the 1900 block of Grand Avenue, between Interstate 80 and South Avenue, in East Del Paso Heights. When they arrived, firefighters found “heavy fire” and “advanced fire conditions” at the structure.
A short time later, as they battled the blaze, the flames burned through electrical lines running down the alley, causing a live power line to fall onto the firefighter, said Capt. Justin Sylvia, a Fire Department spokesperson. The firefighter suffered an electrical shock.
The firefighter “fell to the ground and was able to crawl a couple feet from there,” Sylvia said, before crews transported him to a hospital, where he reported to be in “stable” condition.

The fire was extinguished and remains under investigation. The department will conduct an internal accident review, Sylvia said.
Sacramento Municipal Utility District workers responded to the scene and shut off electricity for 13 customers in the neighborhood, according to outage data from SMUD. Power was expected to be restored by 7 p.m., SMUD data said.
