So we took the data behind Thursday’s forecast and compiled it to help you plan your heat-wave weekend.

Each activity score (0–100) is a composite of the weather and environmental factors tailored to that activity — including heat, wind, thunderstorms, rain, air quality, UV risk, fog and active National Weather Service alerts. Higher scores indicate better conditions. A score of 100 would be perfect. A score of 50 is not great but doable. Anything below 20 is unsafe.

Friday Paddle boarding – Not bad early on! But watch the evening breeze

Paddle boarding on the water is fantastic on any sunny day, but the thing to watch for is not so much the heat — although please still be mindful of that — but the wind. The afternoon breeze out of the southwest will be stronger Friday evening than either Saturday or Sunday with winds gusting 20 mph in open areas. That breeze will be even stronger up at Lake Tahoe where temperatures are cooler in the 80s. If you can find a protected cove on the southwest side of a lake, you will fare much better.

Saturday and Sunday are slightly better, especially in the morning when winds are calm, but that afternoon breeze will still be something to watch for.

Saturday Hiking – Head to the higher elevations to beat the heat

Heat exhaustion is a real risk when temperatures climb into the triple digits, and a long hike in the sunshine can suddenly become dangerous if you are not prepared. Thankfully for those looking to stretch your legs, the mountains are calling. The temperature drop will be quite pronounced at elevations above 6,000 feet, with much of the Sierra in the 80s.

Highs in the foothills will be in the 90s and low 100s, so you need to get high enough to escape the heat. Also worth noting that temperatures in Yosemite Valley can vary widely depending on where you are. We modeled the Valley floor, but further down the mountains on approach to Yosemite would score worse due to the increasing heat.

Sunday Beach day – Still windy on the coast

The north coast is sometimes too cold to have the “classic” beach day with sun tanning and beach chairs. For a heat wave, you might think that would elevate the true beach experience.

And you would be partially right! Sunday afternoon at the beach scores pretty well, about the same as Folsom Lake where temps will be around 100 degrees. What to actually be mindful of on the coast will be the winds and surf. That strong southwesterly breeze has already led to a gale wind warning from the NWS for the north coast on Friday, and conditions will be only marginally better Sunday.

For inland lakes and reservoirs, just be sure to bring plenty of water to hydrate and sunscreen to avoid quick burns.

Saturday Tubing – Enjoy the ride, wear sunscreen

Everyone loves tubing down the river, whether it be the American River or further up the Sacramento River. And you might think that this would be a great weekend for that right?

And you would be absolutely correct. It really will be a great weekend to enjoy on a tube floating down the river. No location secures a perfect scores, Temps above 100 degrees can still be hazardous for those not prepared. And be sure to get a tube, not a raft, so that you can cool off in the water.
