Barcelona are reportedly prepared to make Rodri the most expensive 30-year-old in club history with a second offer in excess of $69.3 million (£51.3 million, €60 million).

The freshly crowned World Cup winner has been flirting with a Manchester City exit for months. Real Madrid had seemed the most likely destination before it suddenly emerged that Barcelona were not only interested, but Rodri’s preference.
City swiftly swatted away Barcelona’s opening offer of around $52 million (£38.5 million), pointing firmly towards an asking price of at least $81 million (£60 million). The experienced midfielder only has one year on his current contract and underwent minor back surgery this summer. However, he was voted as the best player at the World Cup after masterminding Spain’s global triumph from his velvety throne at the base of midfield.
Despite the initial rejection, Barcelona were thought to have remained confident that some compromise over the fee could be reached. The Times now claim that a second offer of more than $69.3 million is set to be submitted to test City’s resolve.
It’s a considerable sum for any player of out their 30s, but especially for Barcelona, in terms of their current stretched financial status and historical precedent.

Should Barcelona secure an agreement for Rodri, his fee would surpass the $69 million which a 30-year-old Miralem Pjanić commanded back in the nebulous period of summer 2020. Yet, that transfer comes with an asterisk.
Pjanić left Juventus for Barcelona at the same time Brazilian midfielder Arthur Melo left Camp Nou for Turin. It wasn’t so much a swap deal as a mutually beneficial business transaction. While Barça splashed $69 million, they received $83 million from Juve. The financial practice of amortization, which spreads the cost of a transfer across the length of the contract signed, when combined with immediately booking the full profit made from a sale, ensured that both clubs were able to log healthy profits at a time when finances were stretched dangerously thin by the COVID-19 pandemic.

During investigations into Juve’s accounts in 2021, there were claims that the valuation of Pjanić and Arthur were artificially inflated to suit both parties.
Putting that minefield of a transfer to one side, Rodri’s next closest competition would come in the form of Robert Lewandowski, who arrived from Bayern Munich in 2022 aged 33 and worth $52 million. He would turn 34 a few weeks later, marking his birthday with a brace which set the tone for much of his four years in Catalonia.
The prolific Pole racked up 120 goals between 2022–26, averaging one every 118 minutes. For comparison, the lauded former Bulgarian striker Hristo Stoichkov ended his glittering Camp Nou career with 117 goals.
Rodri’s impact will be harder to quantify through statistics but he could prove to be just as important for a young Barcelona team which can thrill going forward while leaving the back door open in the biggest games of the season.
Hansi Flick’s high-pressing outfit failed to keep a single clean sheet across 12 Champions League games last term. Rodri was the anchor of a Spain side at the World Cup which only conceded one goal. One player cannot translate that collective achievement, but Barcelona already boast eight other members of Luis de la Fuente’s triumphant roster.
