The 22-year-old Fils enters the matchup after winning the biggest title of his career at the Cincinnati Open. The Frenchman defeated Frances Tiafoe in the final to claim his maiden ATP Masters 1000 title.
The victory propelled Fils to a career-high ranking of No. 11 in the world and earned him the No. 10 seed at the US Open.
Meanwhile, former world No. 3 Stefanos Tsitsipas has endured a difficult season and dropped as low as No. 88 in the rankings in June.
Tsitsipas did manage to win the 2026 Swiss Open Gstaad singles title, briefly moving back into the top 50. However, the unseeded Greek is currently ranked No. 53 in the world.

Tsitsipas also has a well-documented history of struggling at Flushing Meadows. He holds a 7-8 career record at the US Open and has never advanced beyond the third round.
