Indiana Fever Get Ripped For Revoking Reporter Scott Agness’ Credentials

An Indiana Fever reporter said the team revoked his press credentials after reporting on a Caitlin Clark injury.

Scott Agness, an independent journalist who covers the Fever and Pacers for Fieldhouse Files, said the Fever told him via email that he no longer has credentialed access to the WNBA team. The Fever allegedly accused him of spreading “inaccurate and unsubstantiated information” when Agness tweeted on May 20 that Clark would sit out that evening’s game against the Portland Fire as “part of a strategic management plan.”

Clark, who was limited to 13 games last season, didn’t play in a 90-73 win. Two days later, the star guard returned to score 22 points in a 90-82 victory over the Golden State Valkyries. The WNBA warned the Fever about their injury-reporting protocols after the incident.

“Fever PR briefly spoke with me before the game to ask about the tweet and state that they believed it was false,” Agness wrote. “However, there was no meeting or further conversation before the decision to revoke my credentialed access was communicated to me. In my response, I told the organization that I stand by my reporting and the intent behind it.”

WNBA world reacts to revoked credentials

Other media members blasted the Fever for their treatment of Agness, who has covered the team since 2013.

“The Indiana Fever have revoked the credential of the longest-serving reporter covering the team. Scott Agness announced that he has been banned because of his reporting on Caitlin Clark’s surprising absence from a game in May. Banning a reporter is never the right thing to do,” USA Today’s Christine Brennan wrote.

“Really bad stuff here from the Fever based on this read,” Tyler DeLuca said. “Independent journalists have been the foundation of WNBA coverage since before the boom and this is a scary precedent being set here as access continues to tighten.”

“Here’s a situation where the WNBA office needs to step in and determine what’s going on here,” The Athletic’s Richard Deitsch declared.

“It’s never too late to correct an awful mistake,” Inside the Hall said, tagging the Fever’s official account. “Revoking access from a trusted reporter is never the answer.”

“This is just wrong,” Brett Siegel of ClutchSports wrote. “Scott is the best when it comes to coverage for both the Pacers and Fever, and he’s not some random blogger. Scott is a true professional at what he does, and having his credentials revoked for reporting on FACTUAL information is extremely poor.”
